New cafe opens in Barton

A brand new breakfast cafe has opened in Barton, and everyone is welcome.

The cafe is based at the Viking Resource Centre on Fairfield Drive, Barton and is open on Thursdays between 10am – 1pm.

It was launched by two local residents who started as volunteers, but were employed by us in May to oversee community regeneration and activities on the Caistor Road Estate.

The menu has been specially designed to provide affordable options to suit all ages. This includes kids meals, pensioner specials or vegetarian options, all for under £5, including a hot or cold drink.

Any profit made will go back into funding community activities and continuing to improve the area.  And it’s hoped that the cafe will bring local people together and give them a place to go, to socialise and meet new people.

Sarah Staves, Community Regeneration Assistant at Ongo, said: “It’s great that we can now offer another new service to the area, and we’re really excited for people to come see us, and get involved.

“Social isolation and antisocial behaviour has been a problem on the estate, but since we’ve been arranging activities and engaging with more people, it’s improved massively, and we think the breakfast cafe will also help support this.”

Steve Hepworth, Chief Exec here at Ongo said: “For the last couple of years, we’ve had a fantastic group of staff and volunteers working on the Caistor Road estate to improve the area and make a real lasting difference. I can’t praise them enough for all of their hard work.

“It’s great to see local people taking ownership of projects and actively thinking of ways to engage with the community.  And for us, being able to give back by investing in training and employing two local volunteers is just great.”
