Board members

  • Ongo Partnership

    Ongo Partnership Board oversees all the activities of the companies within the group. It meets several times a year. Here are the Board members.

    Bob Walder (interim chair)
    Bob recently retired after a career in the housing sector for the last 26 years of which he was Group CEO of the Longhurst Group. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Housing and has chaired housing companies and regional committees. He is also Chairman of Bishop Grossteste University. He has been involved in large housing development programmes throughout his career and believes that this is a vital part of the role of our sector to help positively transform lives and communities.

    Matthew Spittles
    Matthew has worked in housing for over 25 years and between 2001 and 2002 he successfully managed the first housing stock transfer in Wales. He is currently Director of Operations with Boston Mayflower having responsibility for Property Services, Housing Management and Independent Living. Matthew is passionate about housing and has previously held positions with the Chartered Institute of Housing, served as an external examiner on housing courses at two universities. Matthew is also Chair of Ongo Homes board.

    Daniel Klemm
    Daniel Klemm is currently Head of Policy and Communications at the Together Housing Group, one of the country’s largest housing associations with properties across Yorkshire, the North Midlands and the North West. In a varied career across the public and private sectors Daniel has worked for the National Housing Federation, Yorkshire Water, the Homes and Communities Agency and the European Commission.

    Kevin Yorath
    Kevin has over 38 years of experience in the UK electricity supply industry in roles such as Killingholme Plant Manager, Group Manager to Global HSE Manager for E.ON. Taking early retirement in 2013 he formed his own company. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and a licensed NLP Practitioner. A registered STEM Ambassador Kevin spends voluntary time in local schools helping children understand the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Kevin is also a member of the Wrawby Post Mill Preservation Society, using his mechanical skills and knowledge to help preserve our industrial heritage. Kevin is also Chair of Ongo Commercial.

    Helen Lennon
    Helen is a values-driven housing professional with 30 years experience of working in statutory and not-for-profit organisations. Currently the Chief Executive for Connect Housing, in West Yorkshire, she is a passionate advocate of social housing as a tenure of choice and as a foundation to a healthy life. She currently leads on all aspects of housing management as well as health & safety, data protection, equality & diversity and communications but has experience of managing supported housing, maintenance, community involvement and service improvement.

    Natalie Cresswell

    With over 28 years’ experience working within a variety of administration roles, Natalie is currently the Operations Manager at E-Factor Group Ltd., where she leads on a number of areas including the Facilities Management of an extensive commercial property portfolio, the HR Management for the company as well as developing the efficient processes, in order to ensure the continued smooth running of all E-Factors services and centres. She is also a member of E-Factors’ Leadership team and so is actively involved in the business growth of the Company.

    James Main
    James is currently a Neighbourhood Sergeant with Humberside Police. He has lived and worked in the Scunthorpe area for the past 25 years and has an extensive knowledge of the area. James is passionate about seeing positive activities for young people through partnership working. Through his current role James has extensive knowledge of the partnership working approach to problem solving. He also sits as a Local Parish Councillor and governor of a local secondary school. James is Chair of Ongo Communities.

    Rupert Pometsey
    Rupert is an experienced Development Manager, having worked with Joseph Rowntree, Manningham Housing Association and presently as the MD of Firebird Joint Venture Company (in Communities Group). He has led successfully significant traditional development programmes and is now leading new development activity in Bradford, totalling £125m. He is a Member of the Royal Institute of Architects.

    Melvin Kenyon
    Melvin worked for twenty years in retail for the John Lewis Partnership, Richard Shops, Boots, and T&S Stores where he was a member of the main board for five years. Later he spent almost ten years working for an agency of the Department for Education in a variety of leadership roles, including Chief Operating Officer. His core skill is in IT and he has also been responsible for a variety of other corporate services including HR, procurement, membership, and facilities management. He is passionate about customer service and intends to translate that into doing his best for tenants. Born in Oldham, Melvin is an Oxford graduate who now lives in the East Midlands.

    Liz Cook
    Liz has worked in housing for over 25 years in lots of different roles ranging from intensive housing management and regeneration in East London right through to her current role as Chief Executive of Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing. Whilst working for Leeds City Council Liz created the new service which followed the Council’s decision to bring the three Leeds ALMOs in-house and provided strategic and operational leadership for the housing management service to 58,000 homes.

    Tim Mills (tenant)
    Tim has been involved with voluntary work for over 30 years including chair of Scunthorpe and district Mind for over 15 years. He's been an involved tenant at Ongo for 6 years, setting up a local community group, secretary of Community voice and sitting on panels such as scrutiny and complaints before joining the board as a tenant member.

    John Wright

    John is a fully qualified Chartered Accountant and is currently in a Director of Finance role at Thirteen Housing Group. Prior to this, John has held senior finance positions at a number of other Registered Providers and has worked in the housing sector for over 17 years. As well as finance expertise, the skills John brings include, risk management, procurement, debt recovery and change management.

    Avril Bairstow (tenant)
    Avril has retired from her role as Auditor for the British Safety Council giving her more time to become involved in community projects and enabling her to join the board of Ongo Communities. She values sharing in the decision process in order to help make improvements for all tenants and feels the experiences from her working life will enable her to contribute in a positive and effective manner.

    David Stewart
    David has spent 40 years in Metals, Health Care and Mining sectors, leading and supporting a number of business transformation projects and major organisational reviews. He helped deliver significant change from operational positions, some in very tough environments. For most of that time, David worked for Tata Steel (formerly British Steel, then Corus) and his experience includes M&A activity in the UK, Eastern Europe, France, Germany and the USA as well as operational responsibilities in Western Europe and North America. For the final 5 years of his career with Tata UK, he held the position of Country HR Director. As chair of the Commercial Board he is looking forward to engaging with this exciting new enterprise and leveraging his previous business experience to good effect for ongo.

    Nev Thompson
    Neville is a management consultant with more than 35 years experience in building construction in a wide variety of contract and procurement roles. As a Chartered Surveyor he has worked with Local Authorities, Housing Associations and Arms Length Management Organisations on the strategic delivery of all aspects of property asset management, specialising in the field of social housing.

    Carol Bratton
    Carol has over 18 years experience in supporting businesses and working with a wide range of people supporting business pre-starts, start-ups, small and medium size enterprises and social enterprise.  Carol’s strengths are in business development, social enterprise, training and coaching/mentoring.  Carol is a SFEDI Business Advisor and Social Enterprise Advisor helping to support new and established businesses and those who wish to become self-employed. Carol is actively involved in her local community working on regeneration and development of the area. 

    Barry Orton

    Barry has decades of experience leading business start ups, growth, M&A and turnarounds as Chairman, Managing Director, Non Executive Director and Management Consultant in a wide range of industry sectors including manufacturing, engineering, automotive, aerospace/defence, e-commerce and leadership training.  He has established and developed businesses across the UK and in the USA, Europe, the Far East, Middle East and Africa.  He is a voluntary Trustee of a children’s bereavement support charity and also a STEM Ambassador, providing voluntary encouragement and inspiration to groups of children and young people in the study of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (“STEM”).

    Paula Gouldthorpe

    Paula has over 15 years experience in advising and supporting start-ups and small and medium sized enterprises, together with strategic partnership development experience to bring together public, private and community sectors.  Current role being within Higher Education - managing, educating and increasing entrepreneurship within a University. Prior experience includes working in the environmental and renewables industry.  Paula has represented on a number of strategic boards on innovation, skills and business support, including previous chair of a board that invested £10m of funding for community development. Paula holds a degree in Social Policy & Politics, a Master’s in Business and is a Fellow member of the Higher Education Academy.
