We're supporting Learning Disability Week

Throughout the week, we’ve been raising awareness of National Learning Disability Week with two events for our tenants, and students from North Lindsey College.

National Learning Disabilities Week aims to spread the word about problems people with learning disabilities can face, and to bring people together to celebrate the great work happening to tackle the issues.

Students from North Lindsey College, living with a learning disability were invited to spend time with tenants from our Retirement Living schemes to chat, play games and help with serving drinks and cakes.

The aim of these events was to raise awareness within the community, and also give students a chance to get out of the college setting to socialise and have fun.

The first event was held on 19 June at 10.00am at Wells Court, Broughton and the second was on 20 June at 10.00am at Broadlands House, Scunthorpe.

Helen Wright, Support Services Manager at Ongo said: “We’re so pleased to be supporting this campaign. It’s really exciting for us to bring the older and younger generations together for something so worthwhile.

“Raising awareness is something we feel is very important, that’s why we’re also asking teams within Ongo to take on people with learning disabilities for work experience. This will not only help them to gain valuable skills to add to their CV, it’ll also help us to understand the kind of support we can offer as both a landlord and an employer.”

Jill Sawo, an Ongo tenant said: “I’ve only lived here for seven months but I love it! The event today has been very good, the students are lovely and I’ve had a great time.”
