Volunteers making a difference
A tenant has recently won an award and another nominated for their work throughout the local community.
Alan Gouldthorpe (Barton-upon-Humber) received a town award at the start of May for ‘his devotion and passion to volunteering around Barton, helping both the people by being a vital source for transport queries and the town to become a better place’.
He has also been recognised by the Campaign for Better Transport for his work championing public transport, along with being nominated for the BBC Make a Difference Awards. Tim Mills (Scunthorpe) has also been nominated for the regional award.
Alan said: “I am an Environmental Champion, I litter-pick around my neighbourhood as part of the Barton Baggers and in other areas, plus I offer guidance on local public transport which includes running a Facebook group.
“I first set it up in 2020 and it now has over 1,700 followers. There can be regular changes to transport routes and timetables within the community, so it’s important to raise awareness and help to ensure that nobody is left behind.
“I’ve volunteered since 2007, and I find it has really helped my mental health through the years. It keeps me motivated and gives me a real purpose. Just because I am unable to work doesn’t mean that I can’t make a positive difference to the local region.
“I don’t do it for recognition – instead it’s to make where we live the best and safest it can be and to pass on my knowledge to help others.”
Tim added: “It’s a massive honour to be nominated. I would encourage anybody to volunteer because, even though you may not think so, you will make a difference that will impact many people for the better.”
Wendy Wolfe, Customer Engagement Manager, explained: “A big congratulations to Alan and Tim on their achievements and deserved recognitions for what they do in helping others.
“We’re very grateful to tenants that go out of their way to improve and look after their community, working together to create places to be proud of. We will continue to celebrate those who make a difference so, if there’s someone that lives near you who deserves to be acknowledged, then please contact us.”
