Celebrating neurodiversity

Held at The Arc on the first Thursday every month, from 10am-12, our Neurodiversity support group discusses key topics and issues, as well as sharing their experiences, and passing on knowledge and support.

Everyone including carers, children and parents are invited, and key speakers from mental health groups, our employment support team, and North Lincolnshire Council, have previously attended.

Here’s what marty, who attends the group, had to say: “The monthly support group at The Arc is one of a few providing crucial linkups for those with autism, ADHD or other neurodivergent conditions in and around Scunthorpe. It offers a safe and friendly space for all age groups to share ideas, signposting, activities or just to sit and chat over a couple of hours.

“The venue is ND friendly, quiet and hosted in jolly nice private rooms. On a bus route, with parking, refreshments are provided and there’s even a little cafe in the arc hub. Facilitation is soft-touch and participation is whatever suits you.

“I began attending with my support worker to combat social isolation after moving to the area and it’s been great to connect with others on a similar neurodivergent wavelength. It’s helping me network within the autism community and build confidence.

“Numbers are modest so it isn’t overwhelming and there’s no pressure or commitment – you can come and go as you please. The group welcomes those with disabilities as well as those without and embraces all identities. Friends and family (and assistance dogs!) are welcome too.

Mark Batunas said: “Both of my sons are autistic, so I know first-hand the battles we go through as parents. Even getting a diagnosis is difficult, and unfortunately once you’ve overcome that hurdle you then have to fight to get the correct support in place.

“I wanted to create this group so that people feel less alone and hopefully we can all support each other and pass on the things we’ve learnt along the way to make someone else’s journey less difficult.”

Booking is not required to attend the group.
