Alans story

Years ago, Alan worked in the hospitality industry managing several restaurants and bars, leading large teams and had lived a happy life in middle Eastern Asia. However, several circumstances went against him in a short space of time including a misdiagnosis of health issues and suffering with Covid.

He first accessed the wellbeing support that we offer to rebuild his confidence following the setbacks and to recognise his personal strengths. He attended workshops and completed volunteer training to gain a Level 1 Health and Safety certificate along with other qualifications. Alan also had the opportunity to go on day trips including a river cruise which helped him to meet people.

Alongside the sessions, he was supported to find a home allowing him to live independently. He is currently completing a reception desk volunteer placement to enhance his search for work, plus develop his social skills.

Alan said: “I used to be a happy, outgoing person, but then things changed – I became shaky, panicky, not wanting to do anything or to see anyone. That’s when I knew that I needed help and went to Ongo.

“I remember breaking down in tears at my first counselling session, but it allowed me to deal with many things in my life that I’d never processed and realised had been holding me back and affecting me. It became easier for me to open up over time and I understood that there was nothing to be ashamed of.

“Everyone was absolutely brilliant, I was really looked after and they went above and beyond in what they did for me. For example, the home that I was supported into is everything that I was looking for – peaceful and in an ideal location with friendly neighbours.

“The support has helped me to rediscover myself and, though I’m still on the journey, I now have a much more positive mindset and have everything in place to enjoy a happy future.

“I was a broken man before, but I’m in a much better place now. I will never forget what they’ve done for me.”
