Partnership breathes new life into recycling project

We have teamed up with Scunthorpe community interest company PHASE to grow our furniture recycling project.

PHASE, which reinvests profits to support vulnerable people in North Lincolnshire, is taking on our Choose to Reuse project as part of its Salvage Row initiative and branding the new service as Salvage Yard. We will work together to ensure donations continue to help customers, including our tenants, to purchase furniture at affordable prices.

However the move does mean that our Choose to Reuse shop, on Enderby Road, Scunthorpe, will close permanently from Thursday 20 December 2018. Details of the launch of the new service are expected in January.

All unsold furniture from the Choose to Reuse shop will be donated to PHASE.

Along with a service similar to the Choose to Reuse project, PHASE also plans to extend it’s work experience programme for vulnerable young people.

Jan Williams, Head of Community Investment here at Ongo, said: “Whilst it was a difficult decision to close our Choose to Reuse shop, the partnership with PHASE provides an opportunity to grow the service to benefit even more people in North Lincolnshire.

“We’re extremely confident they will be able to deliver something fantastic, especially with their experience in running Salvage Row so successfully for two years.

“We’d like to thank everyone for their support over the years and encourage people to continue to use the Salvage Yard shop.”

Sue Whitfield, Managing Director of PHASE, said: “We are very pleased to have been chosen by Ongo to continue this very much needed project.  The Choose to Reuse project fits perfectly with our existing business at Salvage Row and will help to achieve our social mission, to support the vulnerable, especially young people across North Lincolnshire.

“At Salvage Row we make bespoke furniture from recycled wood and each sale benefits the young people we work with.

“Our primary focus is to help vulnerable young people in North Lincolnshire with accommodation and support, including work experience.  This project will help to increase the range of experiences we can offer.

“We hope that the young people we work with will take up opportunities through this project.”
